Patrick Moran Carnes died May 31, 2018 in Conroe, Texas at the age of 90. He was born July 31, 1927 to parents Truman and Maurine Carnes in Texon, Texas, a Texas oil boomtown planned and built in 1924. The Carnes family moved to San Angelo in 1932, where Pat grew up with sisters, Jacqueline Drake and Charlotte Sykes, and brothers, Wallace and Harold (Buddy) Carnes. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Pat is the last known survivor of the Navy ship USS Ottawa that participated in the atomic bomb tests off the coast of the Bikini Islands. In 1949, Pat met his wife, Patricia, on a blind date set up by each of their best friends. They married on Christmas Eve that year in front of the Christmas tree at Patricia’s family’s home. Pat was an accomplished athlete, boxing in the Navy and playing semi-pro basketball and baseball for the San Angelo Checker Cab Company. His lifelong sports love was golf where he played many rounds with friends and his sons at the Albany Golf Club. Moving to Snyder in 1956, Pat worked for US Steel, and was later transferred to Albany in 1961. He worked for US Steel for 34 years. Albany is where the couple raised their family and they were known to most as Mr. Pat and Mrs. Pat. Mr. Pat was an active member of The First Christian Church as well serving as a deacon and elder. After his time with US Steel, he served as a funeral director for the local funeral home while also serving as Shackelford County’s ambulance driver and EMT for 11 years. In 2006, they moved to Conroe, Texas to be closer to family. Pat is preceded in death by his parents, each of his siblings and his wife of 64 years, Patricia. Surviving family members include son, Mike and wife Suzi Carnes of The Woodlands; son, Mark and wife Martha Carnes of Houston; daughter, Kellie and husband Danny Cosby of Durham, NC; granddaughter, Natalie Carnes and husband Matthew Whelan; granddaughter, Victoria and husband Mathew Titus; granddaughter, Rosalind Carnes; granddaughter, Hannah Carnes; granddaughters, Molly and Katie Cosby; great grandchildren, Chora Whelan-Carnes, Edith Whelan-Carnes, Mona Whelan-Carnes, Asher Titus, Levia Titus, and Gracie Titus. The family personally acknowledges the loving care Pat received for the last several years at Good Day Assisted Living. A memorial service will be held on June 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Cashner Funeral Home, 801 Teas Nursery Road, Conroe, Texas.
